You Are My Sunshine: Painting Watercolor Nursery Art Inspired by a Timeless Song
Some songs stay with us forever.
"You are my sunshine, my only sunshine..."
Whether it's sung during bedtime, nap time, or simply while rocking a little one to sleep, "You Are My Sunshine" has become one of the most beloved nursery songs across generations. When I began designing this watercolor series, I wanted each painting to feel like a gentle memory rather than just wall décor.
Instead of illustrating the song literally, I chose three separate moments from the lyrics—each representing a different emotion.

Why Watercolor Works Beautifully in a Nursery
One of my favorite things about watercolor is how naturally soft it feels.
Unlike acrylic or oil paint, watercolor allows colors to gently blend into one another, creating peaceful transitions without harsh edges. Those soft washes help create a calming atmosphere that's perfect for nurseries, reading nooks, children's bedrooms, and playrooms.
I intentionally kept each background loose and expressive so the words become the focal point while the colors quietly support the message.
My Watercolor Process
People often ask how I keep the lettering crisp while allowing the backgrounds to remain loose and fluid.
The answer begins before any paint touches the paper.
Step 1: Planning the Composition
Before painting, I lightly sketched the layout of each lyric using pencil.
I spent time adjusting the spacing so the lettering would naturally flow through the painting instead of feeling like text sitting on top of an image.
Each word becomes part of the composition.
Step 2: Using Masking Fluid
One of my favorite watercolor tools is masking fluid.
Rather than painting around every individual letter—which would be incredibly difficult—I carefully painted masking fluid over each letter before beginning the watercolor.
Once dry, the masking fluid protects the white watercolor paper underneath.
This allowed me to freely paint broad watercolor washes across the page without worrying about preserving every letter.
After the painting was completely dry, I gently rubbed away the masking fluid to reveal bright white lettering beneath.
Finally, I hand-painted soft gray shadows around each letter to create depth while keeping the typography light and playful.
Building Color with Watercolor Washes
Rather than painting one solid layer, each piece was built slowly using multiple transparent washes.
This layering creates depth while allowing light to pass through each color.
Some of my favorite watercolor techniques used throughout this collection include:
Wet-on-Wet Washes
Large areas of clean water were first applied to the paper before introducing pigment.
This allowed colors to naturally bloom together and create soft cloud-like textures perfect for skies and sunsets.
Glazing
After each wash dried completely, transparent layers were added to gradually deepen color without losing luminosity.
This technique keeps watercolor vibrant while preventing muddy colors.
Lifting
While the paint was still damp, I gently lifted pigment with a clean brush and paper towel to create glowing highlights around the sun, clouds, and reflections in the water.
Dry Brush Details
After the washes dried, dry brush strokes added subtle texture to waves, clouds, and landscape details while keeping the paintings loose and painterly.
